The Office of National Drug Control Policy
The Office of National Drug Control Policy has announced a $2.5 million grant to draft model laws which would reform criminal statutes that have disproportionately impacted individuals of color. The laws would also add drug treatment options and support harm reduction programs. This is all in an effort to shift away from the War on Drugs.
Due to the fact that many states react to an overdose by charging the individual with a crime instead of taking measures to treat addiction, the overdose crisis has worsened.
Public health law expert David Rosenbloom states, “To have the Office of National Drug Control Policy talking about ‘harm reduction’ is important, both as a symbol, and for real”.
Despite these efforts to shift away from the War on Drugs, drug crimes are still prosecuted quite harshly. If you are charged with a drug crime, you must contact Martinez & Ruby, LLP. Ensuring you have effective representation on your side is paramount.
